Talk | Communication design

Communication design is more than just a set of visual tools—it’s a complex language that shapes knowledge, builds relationships, and expresses ever-evolving identities. In a time deeply transformed by the digital revolution, this design field remains a fertile ground for exploring contemporary forms of expression.

This talk, hosted by the “Communication Design” research group of the Italian Society of Design (SID), creates an open space for dialogue with young researchers on the role of academic experimentation in shaping the future of the discipline.

Following up on a conversation started in 2024 during a joint initiative between SID and the Graphic Days, the event offers a shared reflection on the evolving landscape of communication design: from social design practices to territorial storytelling, from urban visual communication to the risks of spreading harmful aesthetic models.

In conversation with Andrea Di Salvo and Chiara Remondino (Politecnico di Torino), members of the SID research group, the session will feature:

  • Francesca Casnati (Politecnico di Milano) – Communication Design for Social Impact: Gender Perspectives across Research, Education, and Practice

  • Tommaso Ceccarelli (Politecnico di Torino) – When Design Miscommunicates: Aesthetic Ideals and Disordered Eating

  • Simone Giancaspero (University “G. d’Annunzio” and University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli) – Transmedia Placetelling: A New Framework for Territorial Identity Communication

  • Anna Turco (Sapienza University of Rome) – Signs in the City: Environmental Graphic Design as a Strategic Tool for Urban Regeneration

An opportunity to reflect on the meaning of design today—and to explore how it can remain a critical, identity-shaping, and transformative force.
