BEYOND WORDS

A reflection on the role of type design as a tool for inclusion, exploring how typographic design can communicate accessibility, respect, and cultural diversity.

The study of typefaces goes beyond the simple choice of legible or accessible glyphs, considering cultural identity, linguistic diversity, and user needs, thus reflecting the complexity of our global society.

The exhibition features several type design projects from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, highlighting the potential of type design as a valuable resource for building a more equitable world that respects diversity. Through its power to communicate and unite people through words, it offers the opportunity to celebrate diversity and create a more inclusive future for all.

NOTE TO SELF

Guido de Boer’s installation Note to Self. A Recollection of Memories, to be Used Collectively was curated by Graphic Days® for the ongoing Creative Roads festival. It is the result of a site-specific artistic performance created by de Boer within the Manica del Mosca construction site at the Cavallerizza Reale.

The project, conducted in parallel with the C2C Festival and Paratissima initiatives, highlighted a process of regeneration, transforming an area closed to the public into an accessible exhibition space.

De Boer interprets the theme of the memory of places in an intimate way with the aim of sending a collective message: he presents his notes and annotations using the aesthetics of protest signs to invite the public into his creative space and stimulate a reaction, creating works that combine words and graphics.

DISEGNI MALFATTI

The graphic designer who has depicted Savona since the 1950s

The exhibition presents a selection of Giorgio Malfatti’s original posters and logos, created starting in the 1950s and linked to Savona, selected from a rich archive of works, each characterized by high artistic and documentary value.
Textural signs, bold colors, and vibrant compositions convey the essence of an era in transformation, where advertising graphics became a visual memory and a tangible imprint of a region intertwined with culture and industry.
The archive, now preserved by illustrator and graphic designer Alex Raso and owned by his son Marco Malfatti, represents a fundamental heritage for understanding the evolution of graphic design in Italy. The exhibition is curated by Alex Raso and Riccardo Zelatore of Traumfabirk and in collaboration with Graphic Days®.

FACCIAMO CHE

Following the experience at Milan Design Week, Facciamo Che arrives in Savona, creating an area that integrates playful and participatory dimensions through interactive installations that trigger moments of collective design.

Through Mini Mega Spazio play kit composed of modular, flexible, and removable elements, designed to adapt to different contexts, visitors are invited to build, combine, and transform elements. Play and experimentation become opportunities for encounters and transgenerational dialogue within a free and imaginative design environment, where shared creativity sparks reflections on building and transforming collective space.

The activity is inspired by the Mini Mega Spazio project, conceived by Graphic Days®, which brings together participatory urban regeneration activities based on the design thinking method, realized in collaboration with materieunite.

Experiential Area
07.05-10.05
LIVE PRINTING

An area dedicated to manual experimentation, a defining feature of the Graphic Days® festival format, which every year offers the public the opportunity to try out artisanal and sustainable techniques such as screen printing, engraving, collage, and letterpress, making the world of printing easily accessible.

A permanent workspace open to all, where every visitor can experience this firsthand and take home the results they produce.

Live printing is curated by Print Club Torino: a social promotion association and creative printing workshop founded in Turin in 2015, a catalyst for a creative community, and the creator of the Graphic Days® festival.

POSTERHEROES COLLECTION

A selection of works from the last four editions of the international design and social communication competition Posterheroes, curated by the Plug association: an invitation to the international creative community to take a stand against the standardization of educational models (Mindful or Mind Full), against the culture of perfection that turns mistakes into shame (Making Mistakes), against the visible and invisible barriers that exclude those who don’t conform to “normality” (Beautifully Diverse), and against the indifference that lurks where empathy is lacking (Seeds of Kindness).

The posters on display don’t illustrate problems: they inhabit them, dismantle them, reimagine them. They are manifestos in the fullest sense, visual acts that choose a side.

Every year, Posterheroes engages international young people and artists through a democratic and accessible approach; in 14 years, 28,000 posters have been received from over 120 countries worldwide.

LET'S PROGRAM ART

A workshop for boys and girls designed to reflect on the concept of method as the basis of the creative process, through the creation of a collective work. This arises as a harmonious set of individual works, just as should occur in participatory and regenerative processes in urban planning.
Programmed Art is characterized by group work and the formation of artist collectives, in which the individuality of the individual leaves room for the definition of shared rules, understood as a method for composition.
The workshop involves the creation of installation paths composed of geometric structures, designed to be both built and physically traversed. In this way, the spectator/author becomes an active participant in the experience.
The following materials will be used: a 250×250 cm grid mat, a die, 100 tiles, four reflective boxes measuring 20×20 cm, 35 cm high.
Open to kids aged 6 to 12.

By the Order of Architects of Savona.

REDRAWING SPACE

The workshop invites children to observe and reinterpret a space that is no longer in use, imagining how it could transform into something new. In the first phase, participants explore the environment with an attentive eye, collecting signs and textures through the frottage technique. Surfaces, details and materials become traces of the place, accompanied by brief words or thoughts that help build a first analysis: what is this place like? what feeling does it convey?

From this collection, children are invited to make a clear choice: “this place becomes…”. It is not about modifying what already exists, but about imagining a new identity for the space — a park, a place to meet, a space to play or something completely unexpected.

In the final phase, the collected frottages are cut out and used as materials to build this transformation. The work can be created on a blank sheet, or start from a more structured base: participants print a simplified map of the place directly through a brief screen printing activity, creating the surface to work on. On this base, which reproduces the real space, children build their own vision, combining collected traces, collage and drawing.

The result is a concrete and visible transformation: the existing place becomes the starting point for imagining and designing something new.

FORMER SANT'AGOSTINO PRISON

The pop-up edition of Graphic Days® @Savona takes place in the former Sant’Agostino Prison: a disused historic building at the center of a broader process of development and cultural transformation, in search of a new identity. A container that also becomes a message, demonstrating the potential of social design in enhancing and activating urban spaces.
