Henning Wagenbreth | Symmetrical Papercuts - Graphic Days 2026

Henning Wagenbreth | Symmetrical Papercuts

Paper is a light and inexpensive material, yet it contains endless creative possibilities. In paper cutting, a design is first sketched onto a surface; the knife then decides between black and white, between what remains and what is removed. Once turned over, the sheet reveals a clear and essential form. By folding the paper before cutting it, each gesture is multiplied, generating new symmetries. The result is a world inhabited by palindromes and ambigrams, anthropomorphic objects and two-headed creatures, where form and imagination combine to create unexpected visual narratives.

During the workshop, participants will develop a series of forms through papercutting and explore their compositional potential. The resulting images will then be translated into screen-printing stencils and printed, offering the opportunity to experience the entire process, from the conception of an image to its reproduction through printmaking.
