Mini Mega Spazio goes to Moncalieri

Social Design

Mini Mega Spazio has transformed the access road to the Girotondo Nursery School and the Maria Montessori Primary School into a space of reconciliation between city and nature. The intervention, light and colorful on the surface, is the result of an urban regeneration and environmental awareness initiative. The project included the pedestrianization of the street, tree planting, redesign of green areas, and the creation of a dog rest area. Two street painting interventions transformed the pavement in front of the school and the railway underpass, creating an organic and playful visual language. The entire project was supported by an engaging and informative communication strategy to broaden the positive impact of the urban transformation, along with workshop activities in the schools.

The intervention was carried out in collaboration with Quattrolinee and Neó Natura su misura, thanks to the support of the Regional funds Ambiti Urbani, and with the technical sponsorship of Univer PPG.

Urban painting and green interventions

Thanks to the pedestrianization of the 100 m² access road to the school, the area has been reimagined as a welcoming, safe space tailored to children and the community. With 655 m² of street painting covering both the road and the railway underpass, the zone has gained a more colorful and accessible identity, able to reflect the everyday needs of those who use it. The planting of 20 tall trees and 291 shrubs has improved urban livability, helping absorb CO₂, supporting biodiversity, and regulating the urban microclimate. The new rest area includes  benches and bicycle racks—a small step toward sustainable mobility.

Workshops in schools

The project involved students from the Girotondo Nursery School and the Maria Montessori Primary School, along with parents and families living in the neighborhood, in activities aimed at raising awareness and providing information about the role of nature in the city and the benefits of sustainable mobility. Through guided exploration and analysis of the new Mini Mega Spazio intervention, the community enriched the new pedestrian area with writings and games that encourage new ways of engaging with public space, promoting responsible behavior and greater awareness of the urban environment.

Communication

The goal of the project’s communication strategy was to raise environmental awareness by promoting a culture of sustainability and shared care for public space. Through informative and engaging tools—ranging from social media content to informational signage at the construction site, from educational postcards to participatory street painting—the project clearly conveyed its environmental, social, and functional value, highlighting the challenges, solutions, and benefits of the urban transformation. The communication strategy was designed to foster a sense of collective responsibility, actively involving citizens in the process of change.

Inauguration

To celebrate the inauguration of the regeneration project, the city turned into an open-air laboratory. Students, families, and the municipal administration came together for a day of civic engagement dedicated to caring for public space. Among the initiatives: a screen-printing workshop open to all ages, the distribution of flower and plant seeds, and an educational activity for the youngest participants, who were guided through a path of questions and reflections on the meaning of urban transformation. The inauguration sparked dialogue and awareness about how to take care of the city in a shared and collective way.
